Sony Movies 7.1.A.0.4, Video Unlimited 12.1.B.0.5 update

New update to Sony media apps Movies and Video Unlimited is rolling via OTA. Movies app gets updated to 7.1.A.0.4 version from 7.0.A.0.8 and Video Unlimited app gets updated to 12.1.B.0.5 version from 12.1.A.1.1. Update is confirmed rolling on Xperia Z1, Z2, Z, ZL, ZR, M2 and other android 4.4.2 running handsets.

Movie 7.1.A.0.4 app is a 18.6 MB update, introduces new icons in the pull-out menu to make it easier for you to identify folders, improved application stability and performance. Video Unlimited 12.1.B.0.5 app is a 9.7 MB update introduces faster and enhanced menu navigation with easily accessed pull-out menu, overall color and layout improvement.

S801 2.5 GHz D580x Xperia Z3 compact specifications leaked

A few days back we saw alleged pics of a white Xperia Z3 besides a black Xperia Z3 Compact and now some solid confirmation on the existence of Xperia Z3 Compact has surfaced. XDA legendary developer DooMLoRD who is famous for leaking firmware build before release and reliable info of unannounced Xperia devices has shared a word on Twitter about Xperia Z3 Compact.

DooMLoRD says Xperia Z3 Compact will feature MSM8974AC Pro Snapdragon 801 2.5 GHz quad core processor packed in 4.5″ 720p screen display with Adreno 330 GPU, 2 GB RAM, 20.7 MP rear cam and a 2.1 MP front cam. He has also posted a sneakpeak of about phone details of Xperia Z3 Compact.

Install 14.4.A.0.108 firmware deodex patch on Xperia Z1

We hope all Xperia Z1 users have already updated to android 4.4.4 14.4.A.0.108 firmware update already if you haven’t do it. If you are waiting for PC Companion update notification, well then you can flash the 14.4.A.0.108 firmware ftf on your device. It doesn’t require rooting.

Download 14.4.A.0.108 firmware ftf for Xperia Z1 from here. Flashing firmware steps here. Once you are done now you have too root your device. To Root Xperia Z1 on 14.4.A.0.108 firmware, follow the steps given here. Once you are rooted now let’s install custom recovery.

How to Install Recovery on Xperia Z1

Follow the below mentioned steps are your own risk, you may get bootloop error if not performed cautiously. Do check the source links for more clarification. Below mentioned files are for Xperia Z1 only, do not try them on Z Ultra or Z1 Compact.

For locked bootloaders. You will get dual recovery installed. To know more about installing recovery, check here.

Download below mentioned recovery installed zip file and extract it on your PC.

Enable USB Debugging on your phone and connect it to PC.

Copy the above zip file on your phone and reboot in recovery.
Flash the above download zip file in recovery.
Wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Reboot system.

Now you have got stock 14.4.A.0.108 firmware deodex ROM on your Xperia Z1 and now you can try all mods which require deodex ROM.

Root 14.4.A.0.108 firmware on Xperia Z1, Z Ultra, Z1 Compact

Sony has officially updated Xperia Z1, Z Ultra and Z1 Compact on android 4.4.4 14.4.A.0.108 firmware a few days back which brought some security enhancement, more smooth UI and firmware, some new apps like Whats New app available now. If you are looking to Root 14.4.A.0.108 firmware, follow the below mentioned tutorial.

You must be running 14.4.A.0.108 firmware on your handset. Kindly keep in mind root voids warranty so in case you are wishing to get it back after rooting you need to flash back the original firmware either by FlashTool or PC Companion/SUS. We have tested the below rooting method on our Xperia Z1 and it works fine.

How to Root 14.4.A.0.108 firmware

Pre-requisites

Enable USB Debugging on your device. To do so, go to Developer settings > Enable USB Debugging. If your phone don’t have developer settings option, tap on your build number 5 times to get.
Enable Unknown Sources option. To do so, go to Settings > Security > Enable unknown sources option.
Connect your phone to PC and let adb drives install.

Steps

Download “Easy Root Tool” version V8 from below.

Download EasyRootTool v8.zip

Connect your phone to PC and extract the above file on PC. You will get 3 files as shown below.

Click on Install.bat to run and follow the on screen instructions.

Tap on “make it rain” button on phone when asked to do so.
Your phone is rooted now, check the on screen instructions on your PC. Your phone will not reboot.

Now you have got root 14.4.A.0.108 firmware.

Download the Root Checker app from Play Store to verify for root access. Download latest version of Super User app on your device. Update binaries on your device via Super User app if asked to do so ( choose normal mode only ).

How to move apps to system folder and set permissions rw r r ?

It has come to our notice that whenever we post any apps or mods for rooted devices, many users ask us how to mow apps to system folder and set correct permissions as rw- r– r–. Well today we have prepared a detailed tutorial on this topic. You need root on your device before you can transfer apps to system folder and set correct permissions.

Download Root Explorer app from Google Play and install it. Open the app and grant SU permissions to it ( for this Super User app must be installed on your device, do it if not installed from here ). Below described tutorial should work on all devices including Xperia handsets and other manufacture devices.

How to move apps to system folder ?

Kindly make sure if you do this wrong you will end up getting bootloop and then you may need to install firmware again, so keep a back up of your firmware and data saved. Follow the below guide for noob’s.

Let’s say you have some .apk file like a Xperia Theme which you want to install on your device. So we need to move it system/app folder of our device.

Save the app or .apk file which is to be move to system folder on your device either inside “internal storage” or “SD Card“.
Open the app, you will be asked to grant SU permissions to it. Grant permissions to it.

Now go to “sdcard or sdcard1 or storage folder” wherever you saved your .apk file. Suppose it is in storage folder.

Now go to emulated > 0 > and tap the folder where your file is saved : Suppose it is in download folder.

Copy the .apk file ( hold on to app and copy it ).

IMPORTANT STEP: Now go back to home screen of explorer and open system folder. Tap on button “Mount R/W” and it will change to “Mount R/O” and then paste the app here.

Now hold on to .apk file and tap on permissions option.

You need to tap on options as shown below. We have pasted two pics ( before and after permissions ).

Now after changing permissions to rw- r– r–, copy the app and move it to “app” folder under system/app.
Reboot your device and it is done.

As we moved a Xperia Theme .apk file to system/app folder, you can find the same theme in Settings > Personalization > Themes > Pre installed themes.

Do above steps correctly and you can move anything to system/app, system/lib folder as asked in requirement for your app.

By looking at below pic you can see whole white colored panel on white Xperia Z3 which if came true will be seen for the first time in a flagship device from Sony. Side bezels are also very less but you can see top and bottom bezels are as usual huge. Hearing speaker and microphone is seen on top, bottom bezels respectively. Signature Omni-Balance design is still there whereas Sony said that they will bring a new design in next flagship model.

How to Install Google Android L keyboard port ?

Manual Installation

Download the below mentioned file and extract LatinImeGoogle.apk and libjni_latinimegoogle.so files from it.

Keyboard version : 3.1.20003.1236599

Download Android_L_Google_Keyboard.zip

Move LatinImeGoogle.apk file to system/app folder – Set permissions as rw- r– r–
Move libjni_latinimegoogle.so file to system.lib folder – Set permissions as rw- r– r– and reboot.

After rebooting, go to settings > personalization > language and input > choose Google Android L Keyboard and set it as default keyboard.

Set Material Color Scheme

Go to Advance settings of Google Keyboard.
Tap on option “color” and choose “Material”.

Installation via Recovery

Download below file and flash it in recovery and reboot and do settings as mentioned above.

Xperia Z1s 14.4.B.0.20 firmware Android 4.4.4 KitKat certified ?

Today Sony rolled android 4.4.4 KitKat update in form of 14.4.A.0.108 firmware for Xperia Z1 Compact and same firmware has been certified for Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra. Sony Xperia Z1s is still on Android 4.3 when it was launched at CES 2014 and now a new firmware 14.4.B.0.20 firmware has been certified for it on PTCRB.

14.4.B.0.20 firmware has same naming convention like 14.4.X.X.XX for Xperia Z1, Z Ultra and Z1 C Android 4.4.4 KitKat so probably it is the new KitKat firmware update for Xperia Z1s T-Mobile US. At present Xperia Z1s is on android 4.3 14.3.D.0.183 firmware. This will be major update for Xperia Z1s users.

Xperia TX 9.2.A.1.215 firmware update rolling

Sony has rolled a new firmware update for Xperia TX LT29i in form of 9.2.A.1.215 firmware, confirmed rolling in Hong Kong region. Last firmware spotted on Xperia TX was 9.2.A.1.205 firmware, a bug fixing update over original android 4.3 update. Sony has not updated the new firmware and its changelog on Xperia TX software page on its website.

9.2.A.1.215 firmware update is available over PC Companion, keeps Xperia TX on android 4.3 only. No specific changelog is available for the time being. Slight change in kernel and baseband is noticed. It seems 9.2.A.1.215 firmware is still seeding and soon it will be available for downloading globally.

Which Xperia phones will get Android L update ?

Google SVP Sundar Pichai has just announced Android L developer preview at Google I/O 2014 event. Android L is the name for developer preview i.e. SDK will be available for developers only for the time being to build apps while the next version of android OS will be launched later. Final android L release date and name is still not mentioned by Google.

Many new things like redesigned UI with more lively animations, Android Runtime getting default runtime in next android release, Project Volta coming as improved battery saving feature and a batter way to handle push notifications now even through lockscreen is seen. Android L release running was also shown live on LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live.

Xperia Phones with Android L update

Android L developer preview will be available for download on 26 June via Google Android Developer site. HTC has already promised to give Android L update to HTC M8 and M7 within 90 days of Android L code getting released to OEMs. In all these scenarios where do Sony Xperia devices stand ?

If we go back to last year, 3 Sep 2013 Google launched Android 4.4 KitKat OS and on 2 Nov 2014 Sony announced its plan for launching android 4.4 KitKat on its Xperia lineup. Sony has already updated its whole Xperia “Z” series on KitKat update while other Xperia devices are still waiting for it.

So how long this time we have to wait till Sony comes up with official statement on android L update release timings.

With the upcoming android L update, we are soon expecting Sony to release it plan for rollout of it. We are expecting that Sony will be giving android L update to Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z1, Z Ultra, Z, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z, T2 Ultra, T3, M2.

As Android 4.4.2 KitKat is still under investigation for Xperia devices like Xperia SP, L, M, C; we have a doubt that Sony may not release android L update for them ( even for Xperia E1 ).

Sony has already discontinued android support for devices like Xperia P, U, S, SL, Acro S and Ion so any updates for these devices is out of question.

What we can expect is that as CyanogenMod and FXP team have already come up with android 4.4.2 ( i.e. CM 11 ) build ROMs, so soon we will be seeing android L ROMs for Xperia devices also ?
