Sony has posted an interesting infographic on “Benefits of a waterproof phone” on their blog and it’s kind of great explaining why do you need a waterproof phone and how Sony’s Xperia lineup has an advantage over other handsets. Sony launched Xperia Z as the first waterproof resistant phone of Xperia “Z” lineup and till then we have seen all its “Z” flagships coming with water and dust resistant ability.

Recently launched Sony’s latest flagship devices Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet both offers the one of the best waterproof and dust resistant nature in android devices. As per Sony’s infographic, it says “75% people in UK take their phone to bathroom and 1/5 i.e. 15% reported damage to their phones is due to water damage“.

Xperia Guide First birthday Anniversary, 3 May 2014

gizmobolt.com turns 1 today on 3 May, 2014. We registered domain gizmobolt.com on 17 Jan 2013 and 3 May 2014 at 8.46 PM was the exact date when the first post on Xperia Guide came live. I ( Anurag ) and Ashish came up with an idea to help Sony Xperia community by opening this unofficial Sony Xperia Blog. We are now a big community of more than 16K likers on Facebook, 2.3K followers on Twitter and on various other social network platforms we are active too.

Technically till now there are 645 posts published, 6163 comments received on Xperia Guide. Xperia Guide currently has Google Page Rank 3, Global Alexa Rank 43862 ( changing daily ). We thanks to all readers who supported us, showed us love in making us from a small group to big community.

We have been sharing so many Xperia themes nowdays and today we have brought another theme “Sony Vaio” from XDA user henry chip. As the name suggests this Sony Vaio theme is based on Sony’s ex flagship PC lineup. Nowdays we have seen so many Xpera themes coming up from developers like recently we posted Blacked and Coffee Xperia theme from XDA users dipesh1502 and DaRk-L0rD respectively.

To install Sony Vaio theme on your Xperia device you need root on your device. Soft navigation keys are also changed in this theme where “Sony” is written in place of “Home” soft key. Download the apk from below link and install it like normal apk. You must have android4.3+ running version which includes Xperia theme engine.

Xperia Z2 launch in India press event on 8 May

Sony India is about to launch Xperia Z2 in India on 8 May followed by a press event as per Economic Times India. Xperia Z2 has already been launched across Europe and many other regions of world. Sony India is now sending invitation to the media for the press event of Xperia Z2 launch in India which possibly will take place in New Delhi like the last time when Xperia Z1 was launched in India.

Xperia Z2 is Sony’s latest flagship device which was launched along with Xperia Z2 Tablet at MWC 2014 event, it is still unknown whether Sony will also launch Xperia Z2 Tablet in India which is expected to mark its appearance also. We need to see whether Sony India will make Bollywood Actress Katrina Kaif as their brand ambassador this time also.

Price of Xperia Z2 in India is still a mystery, though we expect it to make upto Rs 44990 to Rs 46990; seeing the prices of other flagship devices of OEM in market.

Xperia Z2 features android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box, Snapdragon 801 Soc MSM8974AB 2.3 GHz quad core processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM in a 5.2″ FHD Triluminos and world’s first Live color LED display. Xperia Z2 features 20.7 MP Exmor RS rear cam capable of recording 4K videos ( 3840×2160 pixels/30p ) and 2.2 MP front cam and some new Sony Smart Camera apps have been added like TimeShift Video, new AR effect app, Creative effect, Background Defocus, Vine. “What’s New” feature has been added which seems a replacement of Sony Select app.

We need to see which freebies Sony will be providing with Xperia Z2 in Indian market, though a 6 month accidental warranty is expected to come.

Xperia L 15.3.A.1.17 firmware update rolling

Exactly a month back we saw 15.3.A.1.17 firmware getting certified for Xperia L C2105, C2104 on PTCRB which was later removed from PTCRB; has started rolling now. We saw 15.3.A.1.16 firmware getting rolled on Orange carrier in Europe on Xperia L and earlier we saw 15.3.A.1.14 firmware getting rolled on Xperia L globally.

Sony has released a new bug fixing 15.3.A.1.17 firmware update for Xperia L today, confirmed on both C2104 and C2105 models now in regions like France, Germany, Hungary, Singapore, Saudi Arabia etc. Xperia L still remains on android 4.2.2 version and we hope Sony soon releases a major update.

Sony Walkman 8.3.A.0.5 app update rolling

Sony rolled Walkman 8.3.A.0.2 app update a few days back which brought new UI to the app which we saw at MWC 2014 event, playing on Xperia Z2 exclusively. Many Xperia users complained about many bugs in Walkman app like low volume etc, fortunately Sony has acknowledged those bugs and released new Walkman 8.3.A.0.5 app update today.

Walkman 8.3.A.0.5 app update is rolled via OTA update, confirmed on devices Xperia Z1, Z Ultra Z2, Z, ZL, ZR, SP etc. Sony clearly mentioned in the changelog of Walkman 8.3.A.0.5 app update i.e. “We would like to apologies“! Sony has fixed all minor bugs reported by users as per them.

Is Xperia Z KitKat 10.5.A.0.230 firmware rolling now ?

Today we saw KitKat 10.5.A.0.227 firmware getting certified for Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z on PTCRB and a few days back we saw same firmware getting leaked online also and now the news is coming that a new higher android 4.4.2 KitKat build 10.5.A.0.230 firmware have struck Xperia Z in Malaysia and Denmark region as reported by many users in Sony Xperia Malaysia FB group and on XDA also.

All the users who reported this new KitKat 10.5.A.0.230 firmware for Xperia Z got it as OTA update, 307.1 MB in size but were not able to install it via OTA. We have not seen yet many Xperia Z users reporting this update. Do check your Xperia Z also if you are getting an OTA update notification for same update or not.

[ UPDATE ] XDA Dev DooMLoRD says 10.5.A.0.230 firmware is currently in testing for prototype devices .

Xperia A2 SO-04F “Altair” and Xperia Z2 SO-03F brochure and pics have been leaked online, both being the handsets for Japan only ( preferably for NTT DoCoMo ).

Xperia A2 SO-04F “Altair” is spotted in new color range from Sony this time viz. Gray Black, Lavender, Orange and White and specifications very much similar to Xperia Z1 Compact / Xperia Z1F which is refraining us to call it new Xperia Z2F handset. For all Xperia Z users who are waiting for official Sony KitKat update, leaked Xperia Z KitKat 4.4.2 10.5.A.0.227 firmware ROM is now available to install on Xperia Z unlocked bootloader handsets only, courtesy of legendary XDA developer DooMLoRD.

There is no specific info that 10.5.A.0.227 firmware will hit as official update for Xperia Z but now you can test in on your Xperia Z if you don’t want to wait anymore. Kindly note below mentioned 10.5.A.0.227 firmware ROM is specifically for unlocked bootloader Xperia Z C6603 / C6602 handsets, don’t cross flash it on Xperia ZL, ZR or Tablet Z ( doing so will hard brick your device ).

Sony introduced Background defocus app first on Xperia Z1S, LTE version of Xperia Z1 in USA, background defocus app blurs an image background to create an effect like DSLR. Background defocus app was limited to a few Xperia smartphones till now but today Sony released it globally on Play Store, now Background defocus app can be downloaded on all Xperia handsets which have Sony Social Smart Camera app installed.

Background defocus 1.2.6 version app is the first version which is seen on Play Store though older versions have been spotted on Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z1S pre-installed in android 4.3 and android 4.4.2 KitKat update. To get the perfect pictures from Background defocus app you need to focus on object atleast 15-45 cm away from camera and background atleast 5m away. It will not work on the maximum resolution of your handset.

Sony has provided an option to download and install Xperia themes from Play Store based on Xperia theme engine on android 4.3 firmware update onwards and first Xperia themes were from app makers “The Green Personalisation” and “Knowit Mobile AB”. After a long time The Green Personalisation app maker has launched new Xperia themes today on Play Store viz. Xperia Themes Bestfriends, Sporty, Blinger, NewEngland, Headbanger; all are paid themes.

Above mentioned all themes are paid themes so you need to buy them before you install them. You need atleast android 4.3+ firmware on your Xperia device to install those themes, working on booth rooted as well as non rooted handsets. Xperia E1 20.0.A.1.21 firmware minor bug fixing update rolling

Sony’s latest budget smartphone Xperia E1 D2004, D2005 has been updated to new android 4.3 20.0.A.1.21 firmware update. Previous firmware on Xperia E1 reads as 20.0.A.1.12. Sony has already promised to bring android 4.4.2 KitKat update for Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 Dual along with Xperia T2 Ultra / T2 Ultra Dual and Xperia M2.

20.0.A.1.21 firmware is confirmed in Central Europe region, only a minor bug fixing update. If you haven’t got the 20.0.A.1.21 firmware update yet on your Xperia E1, download the 20.0.A.1.21 firmware ftf from below link and flash it using flashtool on your Xperia E1.

Sony has confirmed the news of new 1.0.B.4.152/1.0.A.4.11 firmware update for its SmartWatch2 on its official blog which brings many new features like customisable watch faces, wallpapers, calculators; improved Facebook and Gmail apps, notification drawer, Bluetooth connect/disconnect vibration settings.
