Sony Movies 8.0.A.0.6 app updated over 8.0.A.0.4 version

Sony Movies app saw 8.0.A.0.4 version update recently but now another minor update has come in the form of 8.0.A.0.6 version. Movies 8.0.A.0.6 app update brings no noticeable changes over the previous version. As Sony talked about “Movies Small App” in the changelog, it is still not available for download.

Movies 8.0.A.0.6 update is confirmed rolling for Xperia “Z” series handsets, OTA via update center app. Movies 8.0.A.0.6 update is of 12.5 MB in size. We got it on our Xperia Z2 and Xperia SP.

Chromecast Screen Casting comes to Xperia Z2, Z3v, Z2 Tablet officially

Google’s Chromecast Screen Casting feature is already available for Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact and now it officially supports 3 more Xperia devices viz. Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet as spotted on Chromecast Screen App support page. Google’s Chromecast Screen Casting allows you to play the content of your mobile’s on your TV.

Chromecast Screen Casting is still in beta phase, requires Android 4.4.2+ ( Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet are still on android 4.4.2 ) for functioning. This feature is not available for iOS devices for the time being.

To use the feature, download Chromecast app from Play Store, open the app, connect to Wi-Fi, tap on cast screen option to set up.

How to unlock Xperia Z3 Bootloader, Install Custom TWRP Recovery & Root – Video Tutorial

Sony recently revamped their bootloader unlocking service and if you own Sony Xperia Z3 and want to root it along with unlocking bootloader then today we are sharing a video tutorial on how to root your Xperia Z3 bootloader, install custom recovery and root it. Keep in mind unlocking bootloader voids the warranty of your device and loss of your DRM keys if not backed up.

Xperia Z3 comes with android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box with bootloader status allowable for unlocking. Keep in mind for Xperia Z3v ( on Verizon for US users ) you can’t unlock the bootloader as it is not allowed.

Sony updated its Album app to newer version 6.5.A.0.10 today which brings supports for redesigned list views for a more appealing appearance like Folder and Faces. New Welcome screens for PlayMemories Online, with a more streamlined login experience along with usual bug fixes and performance enhancements.

Sony Movies 8.0.A.0.4 update rolling – Movies Small App supported

Sony has updated its Movies app to newer version 8.0.A.0.4 which brings support for Movies Small app for a few Xperia devices. In the Movies app, tap the “Movies Small App” icon in the player bar, to play videos in minimum size ex. when checking your social networks or browsing the web. To use this function download and install the “Movies Small App“. ( Not available officially though from Sony yet, you can download another app for the time being ).

Baidu spyware found on a few Sony Xperia devices running KitKat firmware

Do you remember Xiaomi controversy where it was said that Mi3 was allegedly sending some data to Chinese servers and which was later explained by the Xiaomi officials; a very similar kind of case has been spotted on Sony Xperia devices. It is being found that a few Xperia handsets running android 4.4.2 and android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware have a folder named “baidu” in their internal memory which is not associated with any app and can’t be deleted.

It is believed that the issue is associated with the “myXperia” app which is a similar kind of service just like Android Device Manager. As soon as myXperia app is activated the folder is spotted in the device internal storage. The folder can’t be deleted as it is appearing again in the storage.

How to look if you have this issue or not ? Activate myXperia app from Security settings of your device. Now go to internal storage folder and look for a folder named “baidu”, as shown in pic below.

The above folder “baidu” is seen pinging Chinese servers.

Is there anything for Concern ? Yes, May be.

To find out more in detail, Install this app OS Monitor from Play Store, Activate myXperia app on your device, try locating your device from PC. Open the OS Monitor app and then look for myXperia app check in connection tab the location where it is being pinged.

It is a reason of concern for many users that why the app is pinging to Chinese servers in the first place and as myXperia app has administrator rights of the device what data it is sending to those servers.

What Sony has to say on this issue ?

Sony Xperia support member has confirmed that this “baidu folder will be removed in future software updates for the phone. Until then users can delete it manually“.

Do we have this issue ?

We looked for similar kind of folder on our Xperia Z2 running stock android 4.4.2 firmware but fortunately there is no folder with such name. You can have a look at the pic below.

What you can do now ?

Go to Security settings > Device Administrators > Uncheck myXperia app.

Deactivate myXperia from Security settings. You can’t disable it or remove it without rooting.

Possible Explanation of whole Issue and how to remove the Baidu folder ?

A user Radeon962 from OnePlus forums explains the issue as :

NOTE : It is spotted that even HTC One M8, Nexus 5, OPO handsets also have similar kind of “baidu” folder on their device. Some users are saying that it is happening due to some launcher but some don’t agree to it.

This is a very serious matter and Sony has to respond officially over this matter, we are hoping the company will come up with a proper satisfying answer. Collecting user data without permission is very unwanted and unethical.

Sony launches PS4 Remote Play app at Play Store – Support coming for Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet in upcoming weeks

Sony has finally launched PS4 Remote Play app at Play Store today exclusively for Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. PS4 Remote Play app allows you to play your favorite PS4 games on your mobile device screen via DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless controller ( and GCM10 Game Control Mount accessory if needed ).

PS4 Remote Play app will soon be available for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet users as confirmed by Sony today on their blog. It is expected to hit Xperia Z2 series with the release of Android 4.4.4 KitKat update in early November.

Xperia Z3 Self cracking screen issue appears – One of the first case spotted with a Hairline crack

Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact have already hit market and now it’s time users will start flooding with the issues arising on their device. Xperia Z, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2 saw a very unusual issue of self cracking screen and now an Xperia Z3 has been spotted with the same self cracking screen issue unfortunately ( as per user ).

Xperia Z3 has IPS LCD 1080p 5.2″ Triluminos display with shatter proof glass same like Xperia Z2. A user ( likepeas ) on XDA forum has reported that a hairline crack has appeared on his Xperia Z3 without any drop. Though the corners of the device seems smooth ( a few small scratches spotted in one corner ) , it can’t be said whether it has been dropped or not ( although user claims it has not been dropped ).

Below you can see the pics of Xperia Z3 with hairline crack. Scratches seen on the aluminium frame corners in the pics are due to normal usage without any case, as mentioned by the user of this handset here.

Before jumping to any conclusion, have a look at the below issues earlier spotted.

Xperia Z1 Screen and Body bent appears – User’s fault or Hardware issue ?

Xperia SP Frame Bent Issue appeared like Xperia Z1 – Poor Build Quality or User’s Fault ?

Many users claim it happens due to heating or may be due to manufacturing defect but as the same self cracking screen issue has been spotted on all Xperia flagship devices since Xperia Z launch, it is a matter of concern for the users who have been affected by this.

NOTE : We have not seen many users reporting Xperia Z3 self cracking screen issue neither at XDA nor at Sony Talk Forums. As it is one of the FIRST CASE that has been reported so nothing can be said at the moment. Many Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact users have got in touch with us regarding this issue now.

Probability of its happening is very low ( almost negligible but it do happens as seen from past cases ). So is it user’s fault or manufacturing fault – this statement is debatable so no comments on it!

As per our talk with one of the Sony service center guy in India, Sony do consider hairline crack issue under warranty but no assurance is there that they will always consider your request for replacement.

Xperia Z3 D6653 23.0.A.2.108 firmware certified – Minor Bug Fixing Update

A new 23.0.A.2.108 firmware has been certified for Xperia Z3 D6653 at PTCRB following the 23.0.1.A.1.38 build. New firmware move the build to 23.0.A.2.xxx from older 23.0.1.A.1.xx, though 23.0.A.2.108 firmware seems a minor update over an older 23.0.A.2.105 firmware.

23.0.A.2.108 firmware is only seen certification for Xperia Z3 so far and specially for D6653 variant only. 23.0.1.A.1.38 build was seen certified for Xperia Z3 Compact but newer build 23.0.A.2.108 has not seen certification yet.

Xperia Z1, Z Ultra, Z1 Compact 14.4.A.0.155 firmware certified

A new 14.4.A.0.155 firmware has been certified for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact at PTCRB which is a bug fixing android 4.4.4 update over previous 14.4.A.0.108 firmware. It has been a long since all these three handsets got any update.

14.4.A.0.155 firmware is certified for all variants of these handsets which makes it a possibility that this 14.4.A.0.155 may see a global release unlike 14.4.A.0.133 firmware which hit only selected carriers.

Google has replaced stock messaging app with its new Messenger app in Android 5.0 Lollipop. It has a new material design look which goes with Android 5.0 Lollipop system UI. It is very simple app when it comes to features and UI; attaching media in the messages now is easier with one tap and you will find different color settings of each conversation.

Google’s new SMS/MMS messenger app from Android 5.0 Lollipop is now unofficially available for download and it is working great on non rooted devices running android 4.4 KitKat. We have tested it on our Xperia Z2 and it works great and it should work with all android 4.4 running devices.

Sony Album 6.4.A.0.16 update rolling – Hide PlayMemories Online photos option added

Sony Album app has been updated to newer version 6.4.A.0.16 which brings an option to hide PlayMemories Online photos from the main grid as well as from the top area along with usual bug fixes and performance enhancement. Earlier today Sony updated Walkman app to 8.4.A.5.3 version.

Album 6.4.A.0.16 update is confirmed rolling on Xperia handsets running android 4.2+. Update is available via Update Center app, size of update is 14 MB.

Sony Walkman app has been updated to newer version 8.4.A.5.3 which brings improved viewing in Walkman home, fewer items but with possibility to open full list view. Start up time of the Walkman 8.4.A.5.3 app has been significantly improved along with regular big fixing and performance enhancement.
