[ REVIEW ] Xperia Z2 SCR10 Style Cover Stand hands on

Xperia Z2 SCR10 Style Cover Stand was launched as Sony’s first official protective cover for their the then flagship device. Style Cover Stand SCR10 is a ultra thin flip cover style case available in white, black and a special FIFA edition. It is a special notebook style case which can be used as a desk stand for perfect viewing.

Xperia Z2 SCR10 Style Cover Stand is priced at 40.99$ at MobileFun UK for the time being. It is a very extreme and light weight case and we love it being on our Xperia Z2. Let’s a take a closer look at the case in our hands on it.

It is an official Sony product, comes in white card box.

Have a look at the front side of case out of the box.

It is made up of polyurethane leather ( synthetically giving you a feel of leather case, but not leather in reality ).

Closely look at the pic below, the inner material of front flap do attracts dust and you may find same dust particles getting attracted by the screen of your device when flap is on.

Case has the perfect camera opening hole.

Corners of your Xperia Z2 will have a protection from the case, why, check the below pic.

Let’s have a close look at the case with Xpera Z2 inside in.

You have full access to micro SD card slot, power button, volume rocker keys and camera shutter key without opening the case.

Clear space for connecting 3.5 mm headphone jack without opening the case.

Hole for Camera and LED Flash don’t obstruct the path on any. Notice the folding marked area for using it as desk stand.

Check the close up of the material used in making the rear side of flap.

Desk stand functionality of the case is a great add on but not very reliable ( too slippery ).

Cons

We are listing some of the features which are not available in this cover, though can be ignored depends from user to user.

No Auto Sleep mode.
No magnetic closure.
No opening for magnetic charging pins from outside the case.
Inner material of front flap attracts dust.
Shock Proof – No
No real leather used, synthetic material used.

Conclusion

Overall it is nice case from Sony giving you a premium look than many other cases available in market. Ideal for normal daily use but will not protect your device from any fall from a height though corners are well protected within the case. Choose the case if you are looking for a flip case for your Xperia Z2 but if you want to protect it from falls then go for a strong hard back case.

Sony Space theme launched for AR Effect App

Sony has launched a new theme named “Space” for AR Effect App, working in both photo as well as video mode. As the name suggest you get effects of space like solar system, rockets, alien characters, space ships etc. Overall you can create your own solar system in the captured pic or video.

You need atleast AR Effect app version 3.1.1 running to install the theme. Playing with the app is fun, tap on the screen to change the effects and drag them to change the position.

Sony has updated What’s New app to newer version 1.3.A.0.3 over the older 1.2.A.0.5 version, where you can now search your videos, music and games from Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited and PlayStation network. Update is confirmed rolling on Xperia Z series handsets already.

After installing the new update, open the app, notice the search ( magnifying glass icon ) and type your concerned term their and result will be displayed in the same window.

Sony has rolled a minor update for Movie Creator app in form of 2.1.A.0.5 version over the older 2.1.A.0.4 version. Movie Creator 2.1.A.0.5 version allows you to now change the background music of any highlight video stored on your device as per the changelog and it is similar to older version changelog exactly.

No major change noticed in the update. Sony also updated What’s New app to newer version 1.3.A.0.3 today, in which you can now search your preferred music and video from SEN.

Android 4.4.4 firmware update is rolling for HTC One M8 in form of 3.28.401.6 OTA update, size is 252.01 MB. It is already confirmed in regions like Georgia, Turkey, India, Finland. Android 4.4.4 3.28.401.6 update brings a lot new feature in camera apps like HTC Eye, Split Capture etc.

Xperia Z3 Compact 23.0.A.2.106 firmware certified

A new 23.0.A.2.106 firmware has been certified for Xperia Z3 Compact, a minor update over previous android 4.4.4 23.0.A.2.105 firmware. 23.0.A.2.106 firmware seems to be a bug fixing update only which will be rolled or not is not known for the time being. Today Sony also certified android 4.4.4 firmware for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet.

23.0.A.2.106 firmware is certified for both variants of Xperia Z3 Compact i.e. D5833 and D5803 at PTCRB. Do not expect anything major to be resolved in this update.

After a long wait Android 4.4.4 23.0.1.A.0.167 firmware has been certified for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet. Sony first updated Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra on android 4.4.4 version and later on updated Xperia T2 Ultra family on android 4.4.3 version though it was weird that the then flagship model Xperia Z2 was left out in cold without an update.

23.0.1.A.0.167 firmware is certified for all models of Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet globally which clearly means the roll out is very near now. If you noticed Sony has adopted a new firmware number series i.e. 23.0.X.X.X.XXX for Xperia Z2 series now which clearly means a major update over older Android 4.4.2 17.1.2.A.0.314 firmware and may be a new UI like Xperia Z3.

Hands on Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 – First Impression

Newer generation of SmartWear from Sony in form of Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 was unveiled at IFA 2014 event, following the legacy of Sony SmartBand SWR10. SmartBand Talk is much improved version of older SmartBand which was much of a fitness tracking band only but now Sony has provided a curved 1.4” e-paper display, built-in microphone and speaker.

Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 features HD Voice support with short call function enabling you to listen and talk into your caller. It has built-in accelerometer and altimeter sensor technology. SmartBand Talk SWR30 is IP68 certified ( water proof ). Connectivity options available are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi ( micro USB for charging ). There is no removable core in SmartBand Talk SWR30 but you can remove the wrist strap and connect any exchangeable SmartBand Talk Wrist Strap SWR310.

We managed to grab SmartBand Talk at its launch event in India, let’s see some hands on photos.

Display is 1.4″ e-ink curved white and black. From the basic stuff like current time, it can also display details like incoming messages, fitness tracking step counter, incoming calls and other smart notifications.

Outer strap design is similar to older SmartBand SWR10 ( Read full hands on review of SmartBand SWR10 here ).

SmartBand Talk SWR30 thickness is 9.5 mm, width is 23.5 mm.

It is powered by a 70 mAh battery which can last upto 3 days of usage. Every SmartBand SWR10 user will agree that it has a great battery life and so we are also expecting the same here.

It has 296×128 screen resolution and 192 dpi. Touch response is also good.

It has inbuilt microphone so you can attend your call from itself without using your phone.

Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 is very light in weight. Sony will soon launch the SmartBand Talk 1.0.0.435 App at Play Store which will be needed to make it compatible with your device along with Sony LifeLog and SmartConnect app. It is compatible with wide range of devices even outside Xperia range.

Initially it will only be available in White and Black color units but Sony is planning to launch SmartBand Talk Wrist Strap SWR310 ( exchangeable wrist straps ) in orange, yellow, blue and pink color later on which will be sold separately. Sony has put SmartBand Talk SWR30 for pre-order in UK at price £129.99 / $208.

If you are looking to purchase Sony SmartBand SWR10 then it is available at discounted price of Rs 4878 from Amazon India and for $75 at Amazon International.

Overall we like the new Sony SmartBand Talk as it is embedded with many new features as compared to the older version of SmartBand. As soon as it will be available in market for purchase, we will review it fully.

[ REVIEW ] Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset

Sony’s Digital Noise Cancelling Technology was first seen in the Xperia Z2 ( it has Digital Noise Cancelling microphone ) and with that Sony launched Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset exclusively for Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet the then, but now also compatible with Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact.

Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset do not come inside the box with Xperia Z2, Z3, Z3 Compact but in certain regions you may find these DNC headsets coming along with Xperia Z2 box. Let’s see what makes them special as compared to normal headsets. 98% ambient noises are reduced by an inverted anti-sound sine wave produced, as claimed by Sony.

Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset currently priced at $64.99 at MobileFun UK, shipping world wide. They are available in White and Black colors only. If your phone don’t support DNC then you may not be able to use the headset with its full functionality as they will acts a normal headset only. We tried them with HTC M8 and it didn’t even recognize it.

Inside the box you will find 1 headset pair, 2 pairs of ear buds of varying sizes, manual and warranty leaflet.

Right hearing piece of headset carries the longer strap wire while the left one smaller wire which is exactly as usual found in many Sony headsets like MH750 etc.

You need to have 3.5 mm headphone connectivity port with 5 poles to use the headset.

Strap wire is pretty much long and handy to use. Though due to circular coil you will find it tangling very often.

As soon as you will plug them into your headset, you will see a pop up message on your phone’s screen. In the notification area you will see Noise Cancelling device added notification. You can specify from here whether you want DNC enabled all the time or not.

Go to Walkman app > sound settings and here you will see a couple of settings for the headset. You can specify your environment like Bus/Train, Airplane, Office; do not use them if you are not in any of the location.

Sony’s Digital Noise Cancelling technology really works and you can see a huge improvement in sound quality once the headset is plugged in. You may not find the design of earpiece of the headset comfortable as compared to headset like Sony MH750.

Sony has rolled a minor bug fixing update for Xperia Z3 in form of 23.0.A.2.105 firmware which is now available for download in European regions. It is confirmed in UK region, as spotted on D6603. No significant changes spotted overall.

23.0.A.2.105 firmware keeps Xperia Z3 on Android 4.4.4 version ( which came out of the box also ). Update is only available via PC Companion, you can’t use SUS anymore as Sony has official stopped the service.

Xperia Z3 Dismantled – Disassembly Teardown showed internal parts

Sony’s latest flagship Xperia Z3 internal parts are exposed in its first teardown. Xperia Z3 is IP 65/68 rated which makes it the best water resistant phone by Sony till now. Sony has modified the Xperia Z3 design as compared to Xperia Z2 but the teardown process is almost similar just like it was for Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2.

Do not try dismantling your Xperia Z3 yourself, it will void the warranty and you may end up damaging your device. Only the professionals or Sony Service Center members should carry it out. If you remember Xperia Z3 dismantling pics leaked much before its release at FCC.

Sony Remote Device Lab Service launched – Test apps, games on real Xperia device virtually

Sony has launched a magnificent service called Remote Device Lab which allows you to have a feel of hands on of various Xperia devices of “Z” series and you can virtually test apps and games on the devices. This service can only be accessed by A computer with Java enabled on system and a high speed internet connection.

Sony defines Remote Device Lab service as “Remote Device Lab (beta) makes it possible to verify apps on a wide range of real Xperia™ devices for free, through an easy-to-use, accessible web interface. This way, you can ensure that your apps work correctly across many different devices and platforms, without having to buy the actual devices“.

Devices supported by Sony Remote Device Lab Service : Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z2, Z Ultra, Z1 Compact, Z, Z1, Tablet Z. You get hands on android 4.4.4 version on each device ( except for Xperia Z where it is android 4.4.2 ).

Go to Sony Remote Device Lab Service Homepage. If you meet the system requirements then connect your desired device.

After you have connected to a device, you can have a hands on experience on any device. Try to upload an apk file to the device and test it for development purpose.

We tried to shoot a 4K Video and it also works.

External Camera shutter key and volume rocker keys are also working on the device.

Device has a working SIM and Data connectivity is enabled, only phone calling feature is not enabled.

TIP : You can access FREE internet on the device. Download Internet settings and use 4G Service or Connect to Wi-Fi, password is sonymobile.

You can play and use any Sony Media apps.

How to Root Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact – Install CWM recovery

Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact has just been out in market and it has not been a very long since users got their hands on it and both devices have achieved root and CWM recovery is now available for installation. Demerit of present method of rooting is that bootloader needs to be unlocked otherwise it can’t be done.

Xperia Z3 D6XX and Xperia Z3 Compact D58XX are compatible with the below posted method. Keep in mind that unlocking bootloader will void your device’s warranty so proceed at your own risk. Camera is working after unlocking bootloader so no issues about it.

How to Root Xperia Z3

To root Xperia Z3 you must be on stock android 4.4.4 23.0.A.2.93 firmware , unlocked bootloader, working fastboot. Remember adb is not working in recovery for the time being. To unlock bootloader visit here.

You need to flash the kernel ( Download Z3_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_v01_FW-93.img ) first. Detailed Steps mentioned by XDA dev DooMLoRD here.

To enter in recovery when Sony logo comes and LED light turns pink/amber/orange keep on pressing Volume Up button.

After you are done with flashing kernel, now let’ see how to root Xperia Z3. Follow these steps to root your Xperia Z3.

How to Root Xperia Z3 Compact

To root Xperia Z3 Compact you must be on stock android 4.4.4 23.0.A.2.105 firmware , unlocked bootloader, working fastboot. You will get CWM recovery 6.0.4.7.

You need to flash the kernel ( Download Z3c_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_v01_FW-105.img ) first. Detailed Steps mentioned by XDA dev DooMLoRD here.

One you are done with flashing kernel, now to root your Xperia Z3 Compact follow these steps.
