Xperia Style Cover Window Black, Silver Green, Copper, White themes are already available at Play Store and now Sony has added two more colors to them as Xperia Style Cover Window O and G theme ( with Orange and Green colors respectively ). Style Cover Window SCR24 for Xperia Z3 is Sony’s first window cover which allows you to perform dedicated function on phone without opening the cover.

Xperia Style Cover Window themes are basically similar to stock Xperia themes present on Xperia Z3 and it seems as Sony’s attempt to give the same themes to all compatible Xperia devices ( running android 4.3+ ).

Sony Sketch 5.0.A.0.2 app available at Play Store now

Sony’s Sketch app is now officially available on Play store as 5.0.A.0.2 version which was earlier only being updated via OTA through update center app. It is a major update in terms of build number if we compare from previous 2.0.A.1.7 version but no noticeable visual changes in terms of features are present.

You get notifications whenever new stickers are available, new color textures, new pencil and markers available, pan and zoom features in the sketch area, background changing feature. We got the update on our Xperia Z2. It works on android 4.2+ running Xperia devices.

Sony has updated its myXperia app to newer version 0.0.A.0.71 just after this app was surrounded in a Baidu spyware controversy. It was seen that myXperia app was pinging to Chinese servers and a “baidu” folder was being created in the internal storage of the device ( which can’t be deleted manually ). myXperia 0.0.A.0.71 update brings enhanced user experience and usual bug fixes.

Sony TrackID 4.0.B.7.0 Update – Issue with losing history fixed

Sony Music TrackID app has been updated to to newer version 4.0.B.7.0 from older 4.0.B.6.0 at Play Store which fixes the losing history bug as mentioned by Sony in the changelog. TrackID 4.0.B.7.0 update brings faster recognition speed, new UI, syncing feature of search history with Facebook and SEN account and support for Android Wear Sony SmartWatch 3 ( just like previous version )

TrackID 4.0.B.7.0 should work on all android device running android 4.1+ version, not sure about compatibility of this version for android 2.3 running Xperia devices.

Sony has updated its Movies app to newer version 8.0.A.0.4 which brings support for Movies Small app for a few Xperia devices. In the Movies app, tap the “Movies Small App” icon in the player bar, to play videos in minimum size ex. when checking your social networks or browsing the web. To use this function download and install the “Movies Small App“. ( Not available officially though from Sony yet, you can download another app for the time being ).

Baidu spyware found on a few Sony Xperia devices running KitKat firmware

Do you remember Xiaomi controversy where it was said that Mi3 was allegedly sending some data to Chinese servers and which was later explained by the Xiaomi officials; a very similar kind of case has been spotted on Sony Xperia devices. It is being found that a few Xperia handsets running android 4.4.2 and android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware have a folder named “baidu” in their internal memory which is not associated with any app and can’t be deleted.

It is believed that the issue is associated with the “myXperia” app which is a similar kind of service just like Android Device Manager. As soon as myXperia app is activated the folder is spotted in the device internal storage. The folder can’t be deleted as it is appearing again in the storage.

How to look if you have this issue or not ? Activate myXperia app from Security settings of your device. Now go to internal storage folder and look for a folder named “baidu”, as shown in pic below.

The above folder “baidu” is seen pinging Chinese servers.

Is there anything for Concern ? Yes, May be.

To find out more in detail, Install this app OS Monitor from Play Store, Activate myXperia app on your device, try locating your device from PC. Open the OS Monitor app and then look for myXperia app check in connection tab the location where it is being pinged.

It is a reason of concern for many users that why the app is pinging to Chinese servers in the first place and as myXperia app has administrator rights of the device what data it is sending to those servers.

What Sony has to say on this issue ?

Sony Xperia support member has confirmed that this “baidu folder will be removed in future software updates for the phone. Until then users can delete it manually“.

Do we have this issue ?

We looked for similar kind of folder on our Xperia Z2 running stock android 4.4.2 firmware but fortunately there is no folder with such name. You can have a look at the pic below.

What you can do now ?

Go to Security settings > Device Administrators > Uncheck myXperia app.

Deactivate myXperia from Security settings. You can’t disable it or remove it without rooting.

Possible Explanation of whole Issue and how to remove the Baidu folder ?

A user Radeon962 from OnePlus forums explains the issue as :

NOTE : It is spotted that even HTC One M8, Nexus 5, OPO handsets also have similar kind of “baidu” folder on their device. Some users are saying that it is happening due to some launcher but some don’t agree to it.

This is a very serious matter and Sony has to respond officially over this matter, we are hoping the company will come up with a proper satisfying answer. Collecting user data without permission is very unwanted and unethical.

Sony has updated its Audio Recorder app to newer version 1.00.26 which now supports Sony SmartBand Talk and MDR-C31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset along with other usual bug fixes and performance enhancement.

Sony Audio Recorder 1.00.13 app works like any normal recording app but you have 4 audio recording quality settings. All recording options are as follows Superior Music ( lossless ) 44kHz 16bit WAV 1411 kbps stereo, Superior Music ( compresses ) 44kHz 16bit AAC LC 256 kbps stereo, Standard Music/Superior speech 128 hbps, Basic Music/Standard Speech 64 kbps. Hands on Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 – First Impression

Newer generation of SmartWear from Sony in form of Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 was unveiled at IFA 2014 event, following the legacy of Sony SmartBand SWR10. SmartBand Talk is much improved version of older SmartBand which was much of a fitness tracking band only but now Sony has provided a curved 1.4” e-paper display, built-in microphone and speaker.

Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 features HD Voice support with short call function enabling you to listen and talk into your caller. It has built-in accelerometer and altimeter sensor technology. SmartBand Talk SWR30 is IP68 certified ( water proof ). Connectivity options available are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi ( micro USB for charging ). There is no removable core in SmartBand Talk SWR30 but you can remove the wrist strap and connect any exchangeable SmartBand Talk Wrist Strap SWR310.

We managed to grab SmartBand Talk at its launch event in India, let’s see some hands on photos.

Display is 1.4″ e-ink curved white and black. From the basic stuff like current time, it can also display details like incoming messages, fitness tracking step counter, incoming calls and other smart notifications.

Outer strap design is similar to older SmartBand SWR10 ( Read full hands on review of SmartBand SWR10 here ).

SmartBand Talk SWR30 thickness is 9.5 mm, width is 23.5 mm.

It is powered by a 70 mAh battery which can last upto 3 days of usage. Every SmartBand SWR10 user will agree that it has a great battery life and so we are also expecting the same here.

It has 296×128 screen resolution and 192 dpi. Touch response is also good.

It has inbuilt microphone so you can attend your call from itself without using your phone.

Sony SmartBand Talk SWR30 is very light in weight. Sony will soon launch the SmartBand Talk 1.0.0.435 App at Play Store which will be needed to make it compatible with your device along with Sony LifeLog and SmartConnect app. It is compatible with wide range of devices even outside Xperia range.

Initially it will only be available in White and Black color units but Sony is planning to launch SmartBand Talk Wrist Strap SWR310 ( exchangeable wrist straps ) in orange, yellow, blue and pink color later on which will be sold separately. Sony has put SmartBand Talk SWR30 for pre-order in UK at price £129.99 / $208.

[ REVIEW ] Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset

Sony’s Digital Noise Cancelling Technology was first seen in the Xperia Z2 ( it has Digital Noise Cancelling microphone ) and with that Sony launched Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset exclusively for Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet the then, but now also compatible with Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact.

Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset do not come inside the box with Xperia Z2, Z3, Z3 Compact but in certain regions you may find these DNC headsets coming along with Xperia Z2 box. Let’s see what makes them special as compared to normal headsets. 98% ambient noises are reduced by an inverted anti-sound sine wave produced, as claimed by Sony.

[ REVIEW ] Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset

Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset currently priced at $64.99 at MobileFun UK, shipping world wide. They are available in White and Black colors only. If your phone don’t support DNC then you may not be able to use the headset with its full functionality as they will acts a normal headset only. We tried them with HTC M8 and it didn’t even recognize it.

Inside the box you will find 1 headset pair, 2 pairs of ear buds of varying sizes, manual and warranty leaflet.

Right hearing piece of headset carries the longer strap wire while the left one smaller wire which is exactly as usual found in many Sony headsets like MH750 etc.

You need to have 3.5 mm headphone connectivity port with 5 poles to use the headset.

Strap wire is pretty much long and handy to use. Though due to circular coil you will find it tangling very often.

As soon as you will plug them into your headset, you will see a pop up message on your phone’s screen. In the notification area you will see Noise Cancelling device added notification. You can specify from here whether you want DNC enabled all the time or not.

Go to Walkman app > sound settings and here you will see a couple of settings for the headset. You can specify your environment like Bus/Train, Airplane, Office; do not use them if you are not in any of the location.

Sony’s Digital Noise Cancelling technology really works and you can see a huge improvement in sound quality once the headset is plugged in. You may not find the design of earpiece of the headset comfortable as compared to headset like Sony MH750.

Option to select the class of environment you are in.

Cons

Compatible with selected handsets only.
Weird headset design.
Round strap cable, tangles a lot.

If you don’t have a device which supports DNC technology then buying Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset, practically are or no utility but if your device supports them then surely this headset is the best option available in this class.

Sony has launched a magnificent service called Remote Device Lab which allows you to have a feel of hands on of various Xperia devices of “Z” series and you can virtually test apps and games on the devices. This service can only be accessed by A computer with Java enabled on system and a high speed internet connection.

Sony defines Remote Device Lab service as “Remote Device Lab (beta) makes it possible to verify apps on a wide range of real Xperia™ devices for free, through an easy-to-use, accessible web interface. This way, you can ensure that your apps work correctly across many different devices and platforms, without having to buy the actual devices“.

Go to Sony Remote Device Lab Service Homepage. If you meet the system requirements then connect your desired device.

After you have connected to a device, you can have a hands on experience on any device. Try to upload an apk file to the device and test it for development purpose.

We tried to shoot a 4K Video and it also works.

External Camera shutter key and volume rocker keys are also working on the device.

Device has a working SIM and Data connectivity is enabled, only phone calling feature is not enabled.

Sony is all set for its press conference at IFA 2014 (Internationale Funkausstellung) trade show at Berlin from Hall 20 Messe Berlin (Messedamm 22,14055, Berlin, Germany). Sony IFA 2014 Press Event will live stream at 15:15 UK / 20.45 IST / 16.15 CEST / 23.15 JST / 10.15 EDT.

Sony is expected to launch Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact at IFA 2014 along with some new wearbales like Sony SmartWatch SW3, Sony SmartBand Talk with curved e-ink display. We may also see Sony DSC-QX30, DSC-QX1 lens-style camera getting unveiled.

Sony’s mid range handset Xperia M2 is now available for purchase in Europe via Sony Online Stores. Xperia M2 is the successor of Xperia M powered by Snapdragon 400 1.2 GHz quad core processor, Adreno 305 GPU packed in 8.6 mm thick frame. It has 8 GB internal memory, external card slot supported upto 32 GB, 1 GB RAM, 4.8″ screen display and 8 MP rear cam.

Now you can buy Xperia M2 in many regions of Europe from Sony Online stores. Xperia M2 is priced at £229.99 ($392) in UK, available in white, black and purple color variants. In the box you get EP880 charger, EC450 Media Cable, Wired headset and screen protector.
