Sony Mobile Ends Future updates for Xperia S, SL, Acro S, Arc S, Ion, P, U, Go, Miro, Tipo, J, Sola

A sad news for many Xperia smartphone users, just now it is seen and CONFIRMED that Sony Mobile has planned to stop any further future android firmware updates for Xperia S, SL, Acro S, Arc S, Ion, P, U, Go, Miro, Tipo, J, Sola. We do agree that users of just mentioned devices may not feel good after reading this but that’s what Sony Mobile has decided. Many of the mentioned handsets are not available in market now and if they are, that’s not commercially profitable for the company.

Sony Mobile has taken this decision for all handsets which were more than 18 months or 2 years older, no further firmware support will be given by Sony officially. The present firmware available for all handsets will remain as last update on them. Sony Mobile has just abandoned the firmware support not customer support for those device, keep that in mind.

Below you can find the detailed info on the last firmware update available for Xperia S, SL, Acro S, Arc S, Ion HSPA and LTE , P, U, Go, Miro, Tipo and Tipo Dual, J, Sola. Below info is taken from software “Support” section of respective devices.

Summing up all Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia Acro S, Xperia J, Xperia Go, Xperia Ion HSPA+ and LTE and Xperia P will remain on android 4.1.2 jelly bean and Xperia Arc S, Xperia U, Xperia Tipo and Tipo Dual, Xperia Sola, Xperia Miro will remain on android 4.0 ice cream sandwich.

At the moment Android 4.3 is awaited for Xperia SP, T, TX and V.

While Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1S, Xperia SP will soon see android 4.4.2 KitKat update as promised by Sony in the first batch. 2nd batch of devices may include Xperia C, L, M and hopefully Xperia T, TX and V also.

As per us Sony Mobile has shown proper support when it comes to android updates, we do agree that they normally roll updates late but now they are consistent in rolling updates especially for Xperia Z family smartphones but they should also focus on mid range devices; ignoring them is not a good strategy from such a large firm. Sony releases Android 4.4.1 AOSAP binaries for Xperia L,S,Z,ZL,Tablet Z

Officially it might take very long to get android 4.4 KitKat update on already mentioned Xperia devices from Sony but Xperia devices have recently got love from many developers. XDA devs have contributed for almost every Xperia device to get unofficially CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build on them even the 2011 Xperia devices have got it.

In past Sony has released AOSP binaries for Xperia Z, ZL and Tablet Z and now Xperia L and Xperia S have been added to the list. Yes Sony has officially released Android 4.4 AOSAP binaries for Xperia L, S , Z, ZL, Tablet Z. Build available is KRT16O.S3.1044 ( android 4.4 KitKat ).

Xperia S Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat from HoloUI Team

As when many Xperia devices all from 2011 to 2013 lineup are getting unofficial CyanogenMod 11 android 4.4 KitKat builds from many Xperia developers, Xperia S users were asking when a ROM will come for their devices. Here it comes, HoloUI team has created an Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat for Xperia S exclusively though in alpha stage working smooth.

Previously we have seen Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build coming for Xperia 2011 Devices from LegacyXperia Project and for Xperia Z1, Z, ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, T, V, Go, P, Sola, U, SP, Tablet Z; many builds from which coming from FreeXperiaTeam. Now almost every Xperia device have got Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build except for Xperia Ion.

As per HoloUI team, ROM is still in alpha stage, if you want to try it you can. Installing such ROMs require you to unlock the bootloader of phone. Keep in mind to have a backup of the DRM keys before unlocking the bootloader for safety.

Xperia keyboard version 5.6.D.1.28 OTA update for Xperia S, SL, P

It’s great to see that Sony has not forgotten Xperia S, SL and P, as users have reported an OTA update coming for Xperia keyboard version 5.6.D.1.28. Xperia S, SL and P at present are on android 4.1.2 jelly bean and with the introduction of android 4.4 KitKat Project Svelte; Xperia S, SL, Acro S and P users can expect to get android 4.3 and android 4.4 KitKat updates though chances are very less.

Xperia keyboard version 5.6.D.1.28 update is available in update center app on your Xperia S, SL and P. Update brings no visual changes rather some “software performance improvement” to rectify the lag in the keyboard app.

Look for the notification as shown below in update center app and update your Xperia Keyboard app.

Well the great news is that DooMLoRD, renowned XDA developer has successfully rooted this new 6.2.B.1.96 firmware within an hour of its launch, let’s see how you can root 6.2.B.1.96 firmware on Xperia S, SL and Acro S.

Sony has patched the perf_event exploit ( so to root 6.2.B.1.96 firmware would have been difficult ) so DooMLoRD found another way to root by flashing back old kernel on which root exploit was working and then again re flashing the new kernel, so root is there 🙂

How to Root Xperia S, SL, Acro S 6.2.B.1.96 firmware ?

Warning

Below method works only for Xperia S LT26i / Lt26ii 6.2.B.1.96 firmware any customization. Do not try on any other variants.

Download DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit v18 from below to root your Xperia S, SL.

Download XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.1.96_KernelOnly.ftf | 6.33 MB

Download FlashTool from below link, if you don’t have it.

STEPS for ROOTING :- ( Below steps are for root 6.2.B.1.96 firmware Xperia S )

Workin on both Locked as well as UnLocked Bootloaders.

Enable USB Debugging and unknown sources option on your phone before proceeding. Do not use other kit version except V18.

Download Flashtool, Open it. Flash the “XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.0.211_KernelOnly.ftf” file on your Xperia S. It is the kernel of an old firmware of Xperia S which was rootable.
Reboot your Xperia S after flashing. Connect to PC in USB Debugging mode.
Do not forget to close FLASHTOOL. CLOSE FLASHTOOL , before proceeding next step or you will get serious error.
Extract the downloaded “DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip” file and run the “runme_win” file.
Follow onscreen instructions to root Xperia S and once it is rooted, device will reboot. Verify that you are rooted, run SuperSU app.
Now switch off your Xperia S. OPEN FLASHTOOL.
Now you need to flash “XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.1.96_KernelOnly.ftf ” file in order to get back the true kernel of Android 4.1.2 6.2.B.1.96 firmware of Xperia S.
After flashing, disconnect the phone from PC, reboot it and your Xperia S is now rooted and we are done with rooting Xperia S 6.2.B.1.96 firmware.

To root 6.2.B.1.96 firmware you just need to perform above steps carefully.

NOTE :- Xperia SL users can use their respective kernels or the kernels from Xperia S as posted above.

P.S. We are not sure whether this rooting kit supports Acro S or not, still if you want to go ahead, root at your own risk. Respective kernels of Xperia Acro S are added below.

Xperia S LT26i ,SL Lt26ii , Acro S Lt26w 6.2.B.1.96 firmware update rolled out just now officially. It is expected a major update over previous buggy Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware update.

6.2.B.1.96 firmware update still brings Android 4.1.2 on all three phones and has been confirmed in Nordic regions first particularly Sweden. In India, Taiwan, Brazil and Spain also users got the update. On Unlocked versions in UK, users of Xperia S reported the update. This time update is of 485 MB making it a major bug fixing update 🙂

Tipster who posted the leaked changelog and details regarding 6.2.B.1.96 firmware says that it fixes many previous bugs which were present on Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware which got a lot many criticism from Xperia S, SL and Acro S users world wide.

Expected bugs to be fixed in this update are:-

1080p Full HD video lag.
2G Data connectivity bug.
Purplish tint in camera pics.
2x Battery drain bug.
Volume up and down buttons bug.

Other major bug was Wi-Fi bug which many users from Syria reported furiously to us.

Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean 6.2.B.1.96 firmware has been spotted now for Xperia SL LT26ii and same firmware is obviously expected for Xperia S LT26i and Acro S LT26w.

Android Version – 4.1.2
Baseband version – 8660-AAABQOLYM-314010-39
Kernel Version – 3.4.0
Build Number – 6.2.B.1.96

Baseband version has been changed as compared to previous 6.2.B.0.211 firmware and kernel is also expected to be changed.

Tipster also states that 6.2.B.1.96 firmware will be certified on PTCRB with a few weeks and may be rolled at the end of August, No ETA till now.

Sony released Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware officially for Xperia S LT26i, Xperia SL LT26ii and Xperia Acro S LT26w on 11 June, 10 days later when the first build of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 launched for above three handsets. As told by sources, Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware didn’t land world-wide.

Xperia S,SL,Acro S 6.2.B.1.96 firmware Rolled NOW – Major Update fixed 1080p HD Video Lag, Volume Up button bug.

For Indian Users :- Xperia S Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware was reported by many users in India, but Xperia SL LT26ii users still haven’t got the official notification via PC Companion or SUS. We have been receiving mails since it’s launch and we have not seen a single Xperia SL LT26ii user in India who has got the notification. Now we have brought a solution for Xperia SL LT26ii Indian users 🙂

Note :- Type *#*#7378423#*#* and then go to “Service Info” > “Software Info” and check file system version. For India users it must be like “WORLD_6.2.B.0.211” . In India normally Brand – World firmware is updated. If it is then you can update by following our manual flashing guide.

What’s the Catch ?

Enable “USB Debugging” on phone, Go to Settings > Developer Option >Enable USB debugging.
Enable “Unknown Sources” on phone, Go to Settings >Security > Enable Unknown sources.

Manual Flashing Tutorial Guide for any Xperia Handset – NOOB’S Guide

Below mentioned tutorial works for any Xperia 2012, 2013 handset. Just perform the below steps for your Phone. We have described the tutorial using “Xperia SL LT26ii”.

Installing Drivers for Xperia SL LT26ii

We must install drivers for our phone. As we are updating Xperia SL LT26ii so after installing Flashtool on your computer, go to “C:\Flashtool\drivers” and click on “Flashtool-drivers application”.
Install the Driver for Xperia SL LT26ii by choosing from the option “Select Components to install”. Check the mark for “Xperia SL Driver”. Click on “Install” option.

Wait till Xperia SL LT26ii drivers are installing on your PC. As soon as drivers are installed. Click on “Finish”.

Placing firmware ftf file on Flashtool folder

After downloading the above firmware ftf file, Copy the ftf file downloaded above in folder “C:\Flashtool\firmwares“.

Open Flashtool

Click on “FlashTool” application in folder “C:\Flashtool” and run it as admin.

Click on “Black Lightning Bolt” icon on the top left corner of the FlashTool window and then a pop up box appears as shown below. Choose option “Flashmode” and then click “Ok”.

Choosing Firmware to Flash

You will see a screen as shown below now after entering into Flashmode. Now in the left side box, you will see your downloaded firmware listed which you placed in “C:\Flashtool\firmwares“.

Now we will choose our firmware. Select the firmware “6.2.B.0.211” from the list on left side box and click on it. You will see the content of ftf files listed in the “Content” section. Under “Wipe” section make sure you check the boxes of “DATA, CACHE, APPSLOG”. You chosen option screen must look similar to as shown below.

Start FLASHING

Click on “Flash” Button, now FlashTool will prepare files for flashing and you will see a screen as shown below.

Connecting Phone to PC

Now as soon as your see onscreen instruction asking you to connect your phone to PC, Switch off your Phone. Connect USB cable to PC and now pressing “volume down” button on phone insert cable in phone. Now you will see your phone detected by system as green LED lights up.

Flashing Starts…

As soon as your phone is connected in flashing mode, flashing process begins as shown below. Do not do anything now. FlashTool will flash the required files on your Xperia SL. As when flashing is finished you will see the notification on screen. Check screenshots below…

After Flashing

As you see on screen the message “ending flash session, Flashing finished”. Disconnect your phone from PC. Reboot your phone now, the first reboot after flashing the Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware ftf file will take a little bit time. Do not panic. Keep calm phone will start after some Sony animations 😛

Must Step to Do after Flashing

As soon as your phone reboots, go to “Settings > Back up and Restore > Factory Reset > Check mark option “erase all data on SD card” > Now Factory reset your phone. As soon done, your phone will boot up itself and now a fresh installation has been taken.

Why Factory reset ?

Factory reset will give you a fresh installation of Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware and it solved our Wi-Fi issue 🙂 So it’s a worth doing step…

After Factory resetting ? Updating Officially via SUS or PCC Method

If you want to be 100% sure of the original firmware on your phone depending upon your region ( Ours is INDIA ), you can now update or repair your phone’ software via PC Companion or SUS. It will give you a fresh installation of Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware as per your region deployed by Sony. ( We did this step and it’s worth ). In this way your phone will be officially updated via PCC or SUS.

If you don’t want to do above step then after factory resetting, just back up your content via PC Companion. You will be able to receive any future updates via PCC or SUS , no issues regarding this…

NFC Bug fixing Xperia S,SL Jelly Bean Update coming in Week 28 of July

Well it looks Sony Mobile Support is listening to the users now, many users are reporting about the bugs which are present in the Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 and 6.2.B.0.211 firmware. As per now it is hinted that a new Xperia S LT26i and Xperia SL L26ii Jelly Bean update is about to roll fixing NFC bug issue

Xperia S, SL Jelly Bean – NFC Bug Fixing Update in Week 28 of July

Users are reporting that while using NFC on Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 and 6.2.B.0.211 firmware nothing happens after “touch to beam” option. Well on reply to this, Sony Xperia Support Member “Johan” replied that a new NFC bug fixing update will be rolling out in the Week 28 of July i.e during the period 8 July 2013 to 14 July.

Main bugs in Xperia S, SL Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 and 6.2.B.0.211 firmware

1080p full HD resolution video capture lags a lot, though 720p HD Video mode is working fine.
Battery Drain and Heating is a serious issue. Battery is draining at 2x speed as compared to ICS for many users. Phone gets heats up to 45-48C in 15 minutes of continuous usage. Though official support claiming that battery stabilizes after a week but nothing like that happened.
2G Mobile Data connectivity issue. On 2G mode mobile data runs very slow, we are able to connect to internet but no able to download or surf anything. Error 927 pops up on Google Play disallowing us to download anything.
Wi-Fi issues, people are not able to connect over Wi-Fi. Either the Wi-Fi don’t detect any router of if it does you are not able to connect over it. Though Wi-Fi issue resolved for us after doing factory data reset.

Well in case we want to tell you that Sony Xperia Support has looked to “2G Mobile Data connectivity issue” and it is hopefully fixed in upcoming updates as we can by seeing the response from official Sony Xperia Support member.

Another minor bug is that, whenever battery is low to 14%, Xperia S, SL users on Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 and 6.2.B.0.211 firmware gets a notification of “Switch to Stamina Mode for power management” but actually Xperia S and SL doesn’t have any Stamina Mode. So it’s a minor bug, warning should be switching on to “Extended battery Mode”.

Well Sony Xperia Support made it clear that Xperia S and SL on Jelly Bean will not be supporting Stamina Mode ever confirmed.

As per now many answers have been cleared by these statements by official Sony Xperia Support. Well we are now looking forward to 28 week of July for the upcoming update and seeing which bugs will be fixed or not.

All the bugs which were present in Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware ares still there in Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware. So Sony just rolled out an update with the different build number nothing more 😛

Reboot your phone into recovery (CWM).
Kindly check and make sure that /system partition is unmounted.
Now flash the “update.zip” from ROM (Time consuming process).
DooMLoRD has mentioned that during the first reboot, phone will reboot again after the boot animation.
Preceding boot will take more time, it is expected.
You may see “flashing firmware screen” during or after some boot, let is happen, do not interrupt the process in between.

Basically what users are now reporting that, SONY has not fixed any bugs except for that Wi-Fi issue and GPS. All bugs ares till present in this update. :/ We are checking the battery drain issue now and Wi-Fi also again. If to sum up Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware update only FIXED Wi-Fi bug, nothing more, every bug from Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware is still present, overall it’s again a disappointing update from Sony 🙁

Installation / Porting steps

After downloading the stamina mode zip file, unzip and copy it to your phone then, it has 3 folders “app, bin, framework”. App folder contains 3 apk files as “SemcPowerSaveModule.apk , Settings.apk, SuperStamina.apk”.

Do change the permission while moving below 3 files.

Now move the folder “app” to “system/app”.
Now move the file “bin” to “system/bin”. Change permissions to “Rwxr-xr-x”.
Now move file “framework.jar” to “system/framework”.

All done, reboot your device now 🙂 If it didn’t work for you, try checking the method 2 below.

Just now we spotted that PTCRB has officially listed Jelly Bean firmware 6.2.B.0.211 for all three phones Xperia S, SL and Acro S on 4th June, it means that it will be coming very soon now. It’s a good news actually, so when will it be released ? Is it also gonna be late, we guess no Sony officially gave answer to that too 🙂

After having so many bugs in the Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware, many Xperia S users were reporting it on Sony Mobile forum and in reply to query of one user, Sony Xperia Support member “Johan” posted that Jelly Bean firmware 6.2.B.0.211 certified for Xperia S LT26i, SL LT26ii and Acro S LT26w and will be rolling out soon.

Release date for Jelly Bean firmware 6.2.B.0.211 in the 23rd or 24th week. It means it should either be released around June 3-9 or June 10-16 🙂

We expect that all bugs will be fixed soon.

Bugs in Jelly Bean firmware 6.2.B.0.200 firmware for Xperia S, SL, Acro S

Wi-Fi bug connectivity issue – Wi-Fi after Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware update stopped working. It either don’t detect or if detected it doesn’t connect to internet means we are not able to surf internet or download anything.
Mobile data connectivity issue – Xperia S, SL, Acro S stopped connecting to 2G mobile data after Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware update. It doesn’t connect on “E” but it do connects on 3G mode “H”. 2G data is connecting very slow after the Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware update.
Battery drain issues – After Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware update, battery drain issue issue arose. Now battery is draining at 2x rate as compared to ICS. Before only 9-10% battery used to drain after listening to songs on headset for 2 hours on ICS but now on Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware, around 10% battery drain in 1 hour listening to songs.
No STAMINA Mode – Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware update for Xperia S, SL, Acro S had “Extended battery mode” only but when battery reaches 14%, phone shows warning of “switching to Battery Stamina Mode”. What does that mean actually ? Sony missed Stamina mode so why phone is showing warning for that.

1080P HD video capture lag – While capturing 1080p full HD video in Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware, the video capturing lags so much. Fps for 1080p videos have been reduced now. Poor quality of videos are captured.

Camera Quality issue – No HDR mode, no Burst mode, no superior auto mode was seen in Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.200 firmware for Xperia S, SL and Acro S. Picture quality on 12MP cam also reduced showing a purple shade in the pics if taken with white background.

A lot many other issues are reported like absence of apps like MyXperia, Screen Mirroring etc which were present in the leaked version. Hopefully Sony fix all above bugs soon in the new Jelly Bean 6.2.B.0.211 firmware update. Xperia S, SL and Acro S users waited so long for the Jelly Bean, it should be atleast bugs free.
