Sony Xperia Z, the first of its kind phone of Xperia Z family elder one from all was launched with many great features the then but now it has been so long since it has been in market. Xperia Z sports IP57 certification which makes it water resistance and do has good water resistance abilities, tested myself. But some Xperia Z users from time to time are complaining about Xperia Z water resistance failure and such one case we are reporting today.

Water Enters Inside Xperia Z Screen

Due to back glass panel of Xperia Z being lifted up, water entered inside the Xperia Z screen and LDC backlight was dimmed and not working properly. XDA user “coolingmy” dissembled his Xperia Z in order to make it function properly and fortunately he succeeded, check it out.

Xperia Z was dissembled by himself and he reached out to screen component to make it dry. All of this was done at home from manual tools. Keep in mind do not perform this with your phone, it will void the warranty and can make your phone non-functional forever.

Water was dried out using a hair dryer.

Amount of water inside screen was less this time but it was still there…

He put the Xperia Z on his screen side at bottom and left it as it as for night and when he saw it in the morning, water was gone almost and screen was working properly almost.

A water resistance adhesive was used to stick the back panel again to the phone.

Many Xperia Z users questions the water resistance ability of it but keep in mind it is a water resistance phone only not water proof, do not push it further from its limits.

Xperia Z C6603 10.3.1.A.2.74 firmware Update Rolled Out – Carrier Based Update

A new 10.3.1.A.2.74 firmware has been certified on PTCRB site for Xperia Z C6603, nothing updated for Xperia Z C6602 yet, hope to be done soon. Recently a few days back minor 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware update rolled on Xperia Z both LTE and HSPA+ versions over previous major 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update.

10.3.1.A.2.74 firmware is a minor update ( Android 4.2.2 only ) and expected to fix some bugs only nothing new. PTCRB has updated the list on their site on 1st Oct.

10.3.1.A.2.74 firmware was seen before it was certified on the Xperia Z C6603 which belong to one of the XDA member. Let’s hope 10.3.1.A.2.74 firmware rolls globally but till now it is expected that it will come only on certain carriers.

It’s a flip style case fits perfectly and as you flip the top cover you will see the “Noreve” text logo embedded on both side of covers.

How to Adjust Xperia Z on tripod ?

You can use the 12x Zoom telescope photolens in two ways either put it up directly on your Xperia Z. A bit risky it would be but we tried, though not recommended at all, as the weight of lens may take down your Xperia Z and it’s cam may be damaged.

Put your Xperia Z in the case which came inside box.
Now take 12x Zoom photolens and tighten it in the screw hole opening given in the case and use the phone to take photos.

Note :- Switch flash off while taking photos like this. Hold your phone gently and the 12x Zoom photo lens even more tightly.

Now let’s see how to put your Xperia Z on Tripod.

Adjust the tripod first on its legs. Spread them a bit.

Take the “Lens holder ring adjustment screw” and put the photo lens inside it.

Now tighten the lens holder ring adjustment screw on top of tripod and tighten with the help of black screw given at the side of tripod. Once the tripod is set up, attach your Xperia Z on the tripod lens.

Note :- In the absence of “Universal Holder” as mentioned above phone keeps on losing the grip on tripod stand and there is a chance of occurring any accidental damage to your Xperia Z.

So we won’t recommend it unless you have the universal holder with you to have a batter arrangement while taking photographs and reducing the chance of any damage to your phone.

Photo Results

We didn’t find any better photograph taken with the help of this 12x Zoom photolens as compared to normal digital zoom of our Xperia Z. Photos taken appeared blurred, not at all satisfied with the photo results as what product description suggests.

Pros

Can act as a substitute lens for taking some photos of distant objects.
Keeping a good focal length, nice snaps appears.

Cons

Not suitable for every user. Tricky arrangement may cause accidental damage.
Blurred images not clear if focal length is not adjusted properly.
Regular digital zoom of Xperia Z provided better pics.

How to Root Xperia Z, ZL, ZR on 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware by DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit v18

Sony has now officially rolled out 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware for Xperia Z, ZL and ZR which brings display, camera, battery fixes & performance tweaks to these devices. Only for now Xperia Z Tablet is left and very soon it will also be updated with same 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware.

As you all know Sony has patched the perf_event exploit from 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware onwards so in order to root the devices one need to use the older rootable firmware kernels as mentioned by legendary XDA Developer DooMLoRD.

How to Root Xperia Z 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware – STEPS

Works on both Locked as well as UnLocked Bootloaders.

Enable USB Debugging and unknown sources option on your phone before proceeding. Do not use other kit version except V18.

Download Flashtool, Open it. Flash the “XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.A.0.423_Generic_NL.f tf” file on your Xperia Z. It is the kernel of an old firmware of Xperia Z which was rootable.
Reboot your Xperia Z after flashing. Connect to PC in USB Debugging mode.
Do not forget to close FLASHTOOL. CLOSE FLASHTOOL , before proceeding next step or you will get serious error.
Extract the downloaded “DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip” file and run the “runme_win” file.
Follow onscreen instructions to root Xperia Z and once it is rooted, device will reboot. Verify that you are rooted, run SuperSU app.
Now switch off your Xperia Z. OPEN FLASHTOOL.
Now you need to flash “XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.1.A.2.67.ftf” file in order to get back the true kernel of Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware of Xperia Z.
After flashing, disconnect the phone from PC, reboot it and your Xperia Z is now rooted and we are done with Root Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware steps.

How to Root Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR on 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware ?

In order to Root Xperia ZL and ZR you need to get separate kernel files for your respective devices. Do not flash kernel files of Xperia Z, if done so your phone will not boot up.

Xperia Z 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware Update Rolled Out – Minor Bug fixing

We reported back on 1st Sept, that 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware update will be coming on Xperia Z soon and here it comes. After Xperia ZR and Xperia ZL got an update with build number 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware, Xperia Z has also been hit with same 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware. Now only Xperia Tablet Z is left which will also be updated with same 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware very soon as mentioned by Sony Mobile’s tweet.

10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware keeps Xperia Z on Android 4.2.2 only and is simply a minor bug fixing update only being confirmed in Morocco only till now as per checked by an user from EMMA software. Available over PCC / SUS and Bridge. 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware is in seeding stage now, shortly all regions will receive it.

Xperia Z 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware currently confirmed hitting Xperia Z C6602 HSPA+ versions only. We have not seen any C6603 user stating that firmware update.

Sources at XDA claims that one of the member have this 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware on his Xperia Z C6603 and it is a “TESTING” version now which keeps Xperia Z still on Android 4.2.2 and have the same UI like existing android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware. It will soon arrive on hopefully Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z.

Take this info as rumor as per now.

No info is available regarding the 10.3.1.A.2.67 firmware arrival time and whether it will come or not and we may or may not see some higher build being certified on PTCRB instead of it.

Tipster also claims that he has running Xperia Z1 C6903 on 14.1.G.1.518 firmware which was certified on PTCRB 3 days ago.

Continuing our streak of reviewing protective accessories for Xperia Z, today we are reviewing a unique type of screen guard for Xperia Z which is shock proof. Yes a slight different from all other screen guards available in market.

Folks at BhavTav sent us this “Anti Shock Screen Protector Scratch Guard For Sony Xperia Z”, priced a bit high Rs 400 around 3.5$ due to its special shock proof nature otherwise all other screen guards for Xperia Z and normally available for Rs 100 i.e. 1.5 $ only.

As usual we didn’t like the way in which packaging was done, for our last item also “Xperia Z hard case” outer packaging was poor. Well let’s have a look at the cover of this anti shock screen guard for Xperia Z.

Cover’s front says “Ultimate Explosion-Proof”, an animation made which looks very artificial.

Cover’s back describes the process to use the screen guard.

Let’s look at the naked screen guard. It comes with a green covering which you have to peel it off before applying. Screen guard has opening for front cam but nor for sensors and LED notification area.

How to Use it ?

We will recommend that you take this Anti Shock Screen Protector Scratch Guard For Sony Xperia Z to a retailer and ask him to apply on your phone as he is more experienced one.

Well still if you want to try this at home, let’s see the proper method.

Clean the screen, tear apart along the protective film projection.
Pull protective film completely stripping.
Confirm positive and negative film, stick on it.
Click in the screen by hand to execute the air.

Well at first look it seems like a normal screen guard but it’s just a bit thick as compared to other screen guards, let’s take a look at screen guard from Roxfit and this Anti Shock Screen Protector Scratch Guard For Sony Xperia Z.

Some of the other worthy features are, non-slip grip, scratch resistance, air bubble releasing adhesive.

P.S. All screen guards are almost same, thought the above one says that it has “impact resistance and super-scratch resistance”; to be honest we didn’t try this all. We can’t scratch the screen or checking it’s shock proof nature. We didn’t test it.

Xperia Z C6603 10.3.1.A.1.10 firmware Update Rolled on France’s Orange Carrier

A new Xperia Z C6603 firmware has been rolled out with build number 10.3.1.A.1.10 firmware on France’s Orange carrier. Previous global update seen on Xperia Z’s both variants C6603 and C6602 was 10.3.1.A.0.244 which was a major bug fixing update.

It seems it is a carrier based update and 10.3.1.A.1.10 firmware update ( android 4.2.2 ) is only available with “Orange” Carrier, we don’t see any such update notification on our Xperia Z C6602 here in India. It seems a minor bug fixing update only available over PC Companion/SUS and Bridge.

Xperia Z Back Cover Hard Case was sent to us in a very loose packing, even the cover pack inside was not sealed properly though the product was in good condition. When compared to the package covering that RoxFit and Noreve sent to us, package covering was not at all good from BhavTav.

Xperia Z fits completely in this Xperia Z Back Cover Hard Case, as it has perfect dimension of 140x72x10 mm which completely covers Xperia Z which has 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm dimensions.

Xperia Z weighs around 146 grams and weight of this Xperia Z Back Cover Hard Case is around 15-20 grams which seemed very suitable to us.

Accessibility

Xperia Z Back Cover Hard Case has openings at proper places where they should be, except you can’t open the SIM card slot and SD card slot while the case in on. It may be because there is no need of using those ports very frequently, rest all other ports are very well accessible. Flaps on USB charging port and earphone jack port are easy to open while wearing case.

Go to Settings > Security option of your phone.
Choose “device administrators” option.

To track your lost / stolen Xperia Z follow steps given below.

Clicking on “ring” option, you device will ring in full volume for 5 minutes, swiping through screen or pressing power button shuts the ring.
Choose “Erase Device” option will remotely factory reset your phone and will protect it from any misuse.

Looking for the difference in application of MyXperia and Android Device Manager we found no difference in the location only that MyXperia app have more options or things to do with phone. What is it for ?

As the word “charging” in name suggests, Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock only charges your phone, don’t expect it to transfer any kind of data through it 😛 You need not to open the USB Port flap to charge, just put your phone horizontally in the Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock with those bright orange strips side of Xperia Z inside the dock.

How does it Work ?

You see there are two bright orange-colored pins inside the Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock and when you put your Xperia Z inside it, these pins make contact with the charging dock strips of Xperia Z and charges the phone. These charging dock strips on Xperia Z are not covered by any flaps and when dipped in water, it didn’t affect it’s capability.

On the bottom rear side of Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock, there is micro USB cable slot, which can be connected to the USB cable came along with your phone, if you don’t have it no issues, in the pack of Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock, a charging cable also comes.

What Power Source needed ?

Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock works well with both AC charging adapter of Xperia Z as well as connecting cable with a computer it also charges your phone, that was great. We found that some Xperia Z Charging docks won’t connect to a PC.

Accessibility

Besides one side of Xperia Z that is inside Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock, all other side and ports are easily accessible. So take this Goose White Xperia Z Charging Dock as not your primary source of charging, use it when you need to watch movies or do something else in landscape mode which requires phone not to be in hands.

Xperia Z Smart Pack by Roxfit comes in a touch silver color cardbox which mentions the pack content on the front pack and a pic of Xperia Z Flip Case by Roxfit. Back side of cover reads a small info about the pack content.

Case is made up of fine leather grain just like the Xperia Z and SP Pouch case but this one has a different feel while moving fingers over it, a little bit rough just because of the hard cover inside it, so no issues as it is needed also to protect the phone.

The case is stitched with white thread and “Made for Xperia” is embossed on the front cover.

You can Roxfit logo embossed on the inner side of front cover.

Inner lining of front side of Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit is made of soft velvet which is a lot smooth, leaving no marks on the screen.

Inner surface of back cover is a tough shell in which Xperia Z fits perfectly, no issues in adjusting it.

Dimensions

Xperia Z Flip case by roxfit is 140x77x14 mm in dimension in which we found our Xperia Z ( 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm in dimension ) fits easily.

Accessibility

The front closure of Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit is magnetic which tightly holds your phone when it is inside it.

At the back side, we have two holes one for rear cam and flash and one is for the secondary microphone which have a complete viewable area. No objections in it.

While as the phone completely gets fit in the Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit, so whenever you are folding the front side of cover to view the notifications on-screen or to perform any task, you get a little bit folding marks on the case which we think is usual to get but we saw many marks on the cover after repeatedly folding of it.

We guess it can’t be avoided even, fold marks will come on cover sure.

All the ports are easily accessible on phone, you don’t need to take out phone from the Xperia Z Flip case.

But while charging our Xperia Z on the charging dock we do find some issues, we could not connect it properly neither it was comfortable so that’s an issue as front cover can’t hold itself too long at back.

Sony gave a leather flip case for Xperia Z here in India, no it’s not officially from Sony but it was just provided with Xperia Z as an additional accessory by the vendor.

We can definitely say that Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit is far better than it, it has a lot premium leather, easily accessibility to all ports on the phone and the magnetic front closure.

Durability

Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit is a premium case, a tough one as compared to other ones. It is easily washable by the leather cleaner liquid and can take daily wear and tear. Do not expect it to protect your phone from drop but yes it can easily sustain some small rough handling.

Xperia Z Screen Guards

You also get front and rear screen guards for your Xperia Z with the Xperia Z Smart Pack. Though Sony has officially applied them on the phone before but that’s very thin one so you must apply screen guards on to them for better protection from daily scratches on phone. They are provided with an applicator and a cleaning cloth.

NFC Smart Tags

2 NFC Smart tags are provided with Xperia Z Smart Pack, though no confirmation is there on the color of the tags. On the cover of Xperia Z Smart Pack, purple and green color is shown and we also go the same ones. They belong to NT2 category of Xperia NFC Smart Tags, provided with an official manual from Sony with it.

They are very easy to use, you just need to activate the NFC on your Xperia Z and then just touch the tag on the back of phone. Well while the Xperia Z Flip case by Roxfit was on, tag was detected with no issues. After the tag has been detected, smartconnect app will open it and you can adjust the settings as per onscreen instructions.

How to Root Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware – STEPS

Works on both Locked as well as UnLocked Bootloaders.

Enable USB Debugging and unknown sources option on your phone before proceeding. Do not use other kit version except V18.

Download Flashtool, Open it. Flash the “XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.A.0.423_Generic_NL.f tf” file on your Xperia Z. It is the kernel of an old firmware of Xperia Z which was rootable.
Reboot your Xperia Z after flashing. Connect to PC in USB Debugging mode.
Do not forget to close FLASHTOOL. CLOSE FLASHTOOL , before proceeding next step or you will get serious error.
Extract the downloaded “DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip” file and run the “runme_win” file.
Follow onscreen instructions to root Xperia Z and once it is rooted, device will reboot. Verify that you are rooted, run SuperSU app.
Now switch off your Xperia Z. OPEN FLASHTOOL.
Now you need to flash “XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.1.A.0.244_BE.ftf” file in order to get back the true kernel of Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware of Xperia Z.
After flashing, disconnect the phone from PC, reboot it and your Xperia Z is now rooted and we are done with Root Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware steps.

How to Root Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware ?

Xperia Z C6602, ZL Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update ftf

A month back on June 24, Xperia Z was officially update to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean 10.3.A.0.423 firmware and some days back we saw another Jelly Bean 10.3.1.A.0.236 firmware OTA update being rolled on Xperia Z but only on developer handsets, which was a lot curious why such a firmware was rolled and users reporting it were very few.

But now, in INDIA region, we have just spotted another 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware on our Xperia Z C6602 HSPA+ version via PC Companion as well as via SUS. No such update is seen listed on PTCRB site also. Update also confirmed on Xperia Z C6603 LTE version now.

10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update confirmed in India, Sweden, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Poland till now. Same 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update is also confirmed on Xperia ZL C6503.

We can confirm that 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update for Xperia Z C6602 is just a patch update of Android 4.2.2 🙂 Sony must have patched the perf_event exploit. So Root from previous 10.3.A.0.423 firmware will now be lost sadly.

XDA Developer DooMLoRD has just tweeted that all Xperia Z / ZL users who have rooted handset, shouldn’t flash this 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware ftf file directly. They should use OTA ROOT KEEPER, otherwise root will be lost in this new firmware.

How to keep Root in Xperia Z, ZL Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update ?

If you are updating your Xperia Z, ZL directly via Flashtool, everything in (the /system partition) gets formatted completely, so you loose root :/ So update it over OTA to keep root.

Root Access will be lost, if flashing via FlashTool.

Use OTA RootKeeper, if you want to have root access remain to your phone. If you are updating your Xperia Z, ZL by “Update Center” app, then using OTA RootKeeper, you can save your root access.

All those who have not got update yet can download the ftf file and install it manually.

Users are reporting now Heating issues on their Xperia Z after Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware update :/ Can’t say much on this now, need to test.
Battery Reading Bug has Re-Appeared – Battery indicates now lower value first on screen and then as soon screen is unlocked or touched, battery shows the real battery stats, ex like i have in original 74% battery, on screen it showed 72% as soon as i unlocked screen it showed again 74%, weird huh :/

It is confirmed that Xperia Z Jelly Bean 10.3.1.A.0.236 firmware OTA Update rolled out on a prototype device of Xperia Z C6603, which creates speculations whether the same update will reach to consumer “red” devices or not. Xperia Z Jelly Bean 10.3.1.A.0.236 firmware OTA Update is simply of 43 MB which marks that it may a bug fixing update only, not a fresh one.

CWM Recovery installed on your Xperia Z. To install CWM v6.0.3.0 Recovery on your rooted Xperia Z, please follow the given below link.

How to Install CWM Recovery v6.0.3.0 on Xperia Z on LOCKED bootloader ?

When you are done with above 3 must steps, proceed with below mentioned steps to deodex your ROM.

How to DeOdex Xperia Z ROM ?

Please make a nandroid backup of your ROM and SD card data before proceeding.

We tested on device :- Xperia Z C6602

Download the below DeOdexing Zip file.

Download 423_DXD_CWM.zip I 366 MB

NOTE :- Above Posted DeOdex Zip file is NOT a ROM. It will just convert all “odex-files” to “deodex-files” in these folders /system/app and /system/framework.

Reboot your Xperia Z C6603 / C6602 in CWM recovery.
Make sure /system partition is unmounted otherwise you may get Error 7.
Wipe the Dalvik Cache.
Now flash the 423_DXD_CWM.zip file in Recovery.
Reboot.

Done, you have now Deodexed Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 10.3.A.0.423 Jelly Bean ROM 🙂 Go to system/app and check if there is any odex file, if not then the process if fully done.

If there is any, please report in comments something must have gone wrong.

As now you have deodexed ROM you can try some of the mods and themes on your Xperia Z.
